Week 4!

What a great ending to September we've had this week!

In reader's workshop, we have been reading independently, reading with partners, and finding text-to-self connections in our independent reading books.

In math, we finished up unit 1 and are moving on to unit 2 where we will learn to maneuver the number grid, practice telling time, and start exchanging pennies for other coins.

In writer's workshop, we have been writing small moment stories using these steps:
1. Think of a true story
2. Draw the picture it makes in your mind
3. Write the words to match the picture

We also had some special guests visit us this week!

Mrs. Gross talked to us about feelings:

Erik Street, Director of Public Works for Yarmouth, talked to us about recycling:

Mrs. Wolinsky helped us get familiar with our classroom iPads:
(we've been using the app LETTER SCHOOL to practice writing our numbers)

Week 3 in words and photos

We've had another busy and rewarding week in room 108!  We're all starting to get used to the full day of school and all the new routines.

Though our field trip to the YES garden was cancelled, we were lucky enough to have some of the fabulous nutrition staff members teach us a little bit about the school garden.  We learned about some of the vegetables that are grown in it, some of the animals that like to visit it, and even got to shuck corn and taste some fresh garden tomatoes!  Check out the slideshow below.

In science, we've been learning more about the composting cycle:

In reader's workshop we've been practicing buddy reading:

In math we've been exploring some of the math tools we will be using this year:

And to my surprise, this is what free time has looked like for the past couple of days!

A Week for the Record Books!

We've had a super busy and entertaining first week in first grade!  We've been getting to know each other,  learning routines, brainstorming some rules for our classroom, and narrowing down a long list of names to come up with our first grade team name.  We are no longer just Ms. Berry's Class.  You can now call us The Golden Eagles!

Other top name contenders:
-The Skeletons
-The Chocolate Chips
-The Gummy Bears

The Golden Eagles formed some rules for our meeting space...

Jumped right in to Reader's Workshop...

And made some new friends during math games:

Stay tuned for updates from week 2!
